As noted in Sun Tzu’s Art of War, the Golden Bridge essentially provides the opportunity for an enemy force to retreat instead of acting out in desperation, which could potentially cause unnecessary casualties and destruction in an otherwise anyways won battle, in other words, exercising restraint to let cool heads prevail.
